Anyone who has ever doubted a Marine’s skills on the dance floor hasn’t met Sgt. Maj. Michael Miller. The top enlisted member of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, out of Marine Corps Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., took to to the dance floor to show off some pretty sweet movies during a recent Marine Corps birthday ball. The worm, the moonwalk and the Roger Rabbit were all on display during Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean.” And like a true sergeant major, Miller clearly motivated his Marines. Others quickly joined in — one Marine even broke into the splits on the dance floor.…

It’s Tuesday, so we’re opening the “Terminal Lance” vault once again to share another from the dozens of strips creator Max Uriarte has inked exclusively for readers of Marine Corps Times. Up this week: “Expectations,” first published in the issue dated Oct. 17, 2011. With Birthday Ball season nearly upon us, this seemed like a fitting choice. Plus, it’s pretty damn funny. And, too, you’ll recall the frenzy last year when, one by one, Marines took to YouTube to invite celebrities as their Birthday Ball dates. Mila Kunis. Justin Timberlake. Et cetera. We can’t help but wonder whether a similar…
On Saturday night, I attended my first commandant’s Marine Corps Birthday Ball in National Harbor, Md. It was an impressive event with excellent food and music and a guest list that included more than a dozen general officers, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Sgt. Dakota Meyer, the Corps’ recent Medal of Honor recipient. As is customary, the Marine Corps gave each of the estimated 3,000 guests a gift. This year’s was a 10-inch miniature Marine officer’s sword letter opener, complete with sheath and intricate detailing. The swords were made by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum and Cie, of Soligen, Germany. It bills itself…
Marine Corps Times can be many things to many people. News source? I hope so. Advocate? Sure, sometimes. Antagonist? At times, guilty as charged. I don’t think we’ve ever been credited with being a matchmaker before — until now. Sgt. Scott Moore, the Marine who will be taking actress Mila Kunis to his unit’s Marine Corps Birthday Ball, just launched a Twitter account. Not long after I found it today, he posted this message: [blackbirdpie url=”https://twitter.com/#!/theScottMoore/status/136892377116839936″] I won’t lie, that seriously made my day. Perhaps I should explain the back story. Moore posted his now infamous video asking Kunis for…
Justin Timberlake’s thoughtful reflection on attending the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Richmond, Va., on Saturday night blew up the blogosphere. Cpl. Kelsey De Santis is taking the opportunity to weigh in, too, however — and it sounds like she had a great time. In a new blog post on her website, De Santis said she had the chance to visit with Timberlake before the event, and was impressed with his willingness to mix it up with everyone else at the ball. From the entry: As the official ceremonies ended, Table 10 got the party started, shared some jokes, gathered…
By now, you’ve probably heard that Justin Timberlake did indeed attend a Marine Corps birthday ball last night in Richmond, Va., with Cpl. Kelsey De Santis. The Corps has released the photograph above, and there are others floating around online. Timberlake just weighed in on the experience on his website. To say he appreciated the evening would appear to be an understatement. A passage from his note: To all of you that serve every day for us… Ensuring our freedom, I say: My deepest gratitude to you. I’ve met so many of my heroes… From Michael Jordan to Michael Jackson.…
As this Marine Corps Times story outlines, at least five celebrities are expected to attend Marine Corps birthday balls as the service celebrates its 236th birthday this week. The first of those balls was Saturday night. Actress Linda Hamilton, 55, best known for her role in the Terminator, attended a ball with Sgt. Ray Lewis, a combat correspondent. She asked to go after Lewis hilariously asked Golden Girl Betty White, 89, in a video posted to YouTube in July. As you can see in the following photo, Hamilton got out on the dance floor, too: Smooth moves, sergeant.
In the blink of an eye, it was over. Justin Timberlake may want to take notice. Cpl. Kelsey De Santis, the Marine who famously invited the singer and actor to attend the Marine Corps birthday ball with her, competed Saturday night in Operation Octagon XVI, a mixed martial arts event in Sterling, Va. To say it was a one-sided fight would be an understatement. De Santis, fighting in the 145-pound featherweight title fight, pummeled her opponent, Stacy Sneeringer. With a flurry of energy, De Santis took Sneeringer to the mat early, and finished her off 2:51 into the fight with…
In the never-ending saga of Marines inviting celebrities to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, a new one has emerged: Sgt. Ray Lewis has asked former Golden Girl Betty White, 89, to attend with him. At least I think he’s serious. It’s hard to tell in this two-minute video: In other news, not only has Justin Timberlake accepted Cpl. Kelsey De Santis’ invitation to another ball, he quipped this morning on the “Today Show” that he and “Friends with Benefits” co-star Mila Kunis “want to pay honor to our country and embrace their balls.” While it lasts, here’s a clip…
If you’re exhausted with all the coverage raising questions about whether actress Mila Kunis will attend the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, you’re not the only one. As the LA Times reports, a reporter brought it up during a promotional event for her new movie, in light of the media sensation caused by Sgt. Scott Moore’s invitation and her subsequent acceptance. She looked irked to be hearing about it yet again, and quickly squashed the rumors. “Never did I say that I was not going,” she said. She continued: “I accepted an invitation and I’m staying true to my word… I…
