I’m swamped with projects for our print edition today, but I wanted to take a minute to share new, long-form BBC clips of Marine operations in Sangin, Afghanistan. The narration is a bit over-the-top at times, but the footage is well worth the time:

The journalist behind the camera is Ben Anderson, who has a documentary, “Battle for Marjah,” debuting on HBO on Feb. 17 at 9 p.m. I watched an advanced copy of it Tuesday night and will have a review in next week’s Marine Corps Times. I actually crossed paths with Ben at Camp Leatherneck at the tail end of my embed last spring and found him to be a cheerful man trying hard to make a difference.
While we’re on the subject, I suppose I may as well point out one more Sangin clip, since it appeared online in the last 24 hours and provides a window into the lives of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. It shows a good day last October, when they were hard to come by. Second Platoon, 3rd Squad appears to have spotted an improvised explosive device near a compound, and they take care of business cheerfully:

If Restrepo showed that Army up close and personal, these clips do that for the Marines. Thanks for publishing these, and thanks to 3/5 for all their hard work. My son just arrived in that area as a radio operator with RCT8 HQ Company, and he was well aware of the hard work and high price 3/5 had paid before he ever set foot in country.
