Corps officials will be soliciting Marines to volunteer for the latest step in testing the integration of women in combat arms positions across 14 duty stations between May 28 and June 9. Here’s are five things Marines should know: 1. The Corps is looking for about 500 volunteers — women and men — to serve as the ground combat element of an integrated task force that will be stood up at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in June. 2. Marines interested in volunteering can do so three ways: on the Corps’ Manpower and Reserve Affairs website; by calling (703) 432-2513; or…

Marines weren’t going to be outdone by a bunch of moms and their preschoolers singing the hit theme to Disney’s “Frozen.” Theses Marines took to their barracks common area to belt out the lyrics to “Let It Go” with some real passion. And just to Marine-ize the rendition, they somewhat creepily cheer and yell some “Oorahs!” when the animated leading lady, Elsa, has a wardrobe change. [HTML1] The video has more than 116,000 shares since it was posted to Facebook on Tuesday. Their voices don’t quite reach Idina Menzel’s range, but they sang with enthusiasm. Whatever motivates you, Marines.
A congressman issued a statement after fielding a number of calls and emails criticizing a story about his so-called plan to require war veterans to inform their neighbors that they served in combat — only the story was fake, a product of the satirical military news site, the Duffel Blog. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., put a statement on his website Tuesday disassociating himself with the satire, that “while meant to be humorous, was in poor taste and hurtful to our veterans.” But the Duffel Blogwas created by a veteran — former Marine Sgt. Paul Szoldra, who served as a mortarman and…
The Marine Corps released a new graphic at the recent Sea Air Space expo that highlighted the way it will respond to future crises around the world. I picked up a copy of this poster at the Sea-Air-Space exposition last week, where several generals discussed how Expeditionary Force 21 will work. The graphic diagrams a Marine expeditionary brigade that is forward deployed and can be scaled to whatever size needed to respond to various crises. The first slide shows a crisis breaking out on land, but not too far from the shore. Expeditionary Force 21 points out that most of…
Drill instructors got in the faces of women’s basketball coaches this week during an annual conference to teach them how to promote leadership and unit cohesion through physical fitness. Members of the Marine Corps Recruiting Command attended the 2014 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Convention in Nashville, Tenn., from Saturday through Tuesday. Drill instructors led a morning workout with coaches from high schools to collegiate programs of all divisions, according to a Marine Corps news release. The association gathers to network with established leaders, like those in the Marine Corps, while continuing to enhance and develop their athletic skills. During the…
This post is from our friends at Navy Times. By MEGHANN MYERS Former Special Operator 1st Class (SEAL) Chris Heben was headed to buy his mom a birthday gift March 28 when, following an altercation, he was shot in the parking lot of a Bath Township, Ohio, shopping center. The bullet pierced Heben’s lower abdomen. Rather than call for help, Heben, 44, hopped in his truck and tried to chase down his assailant while holding a finger in his bullet wound. Within minutes, he was seeing stars, he told Navy Times, so he decided to pull over at a police station and get some…

Experts want to tap into the way Marines make decisions based on hunches to see if there’s a way to further develop their “sixth sense” and help them guess right more often than not. Most warfighters develop their gut instincts through time and experience, said Lt. Cmdr. Brent Olde with the Office of Naval Research, according to a news release. But now ONR experts want to apply their studies in neural, cognitive and behavioral sciences to help Marines and sailors develop those instincts earlier in their careers. The goal is to help them tap into their “spidey sense” when making…
A Norwegian news outlet posted a call-out to the 16,000 international troops participating in Exercise Cold Response for “selfies” from the field, and the results are pretty amazing. The news site VG Nett posted 51 selfies they received from troops training above the Arctic Circle. They got pictures of fur hats, bearded men, berets and some bloodied mock casualties in return. About 440 North-Carolina based Marines are in Norway for Cold Response, a handful of which threw their own selfies into the mix. Most of the troops are smiling despite the frigid climate and reports of icy rain. The 11-day exercise wrapped…
Former Sgt. Walter George Bruhl Jr. didn’t leave this Earth without a plan — the Korean War veteran wrote his own obituary, complete with fill-in-the-blank spaces for the date and time of his death. “His spirit was released from his worn out shell of a body and is now exploring the universe,” his obituary states. He died in his home on Sunday. He was 80. Bruhl served in the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954, with overseas duty in Japan. He reached the rank of sergeant, and joined the Corps “because of Hollywood propaganda, to which he succumbed as a…
