Justin Timberlake’s thoughtful reflection on attending the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Richmond, Va., on Saturday night blew up the blogosphere. Cpl. Kelsey De Santis is taking the opportunity to weigh in, too, however — and it sounds like she had a great time. In a new blog post on her website, De Santis said she had the chance to visit with Timberlake before the event, and was impressed with his willingness to mix it up with everyone else at the ball. From the entry: As the official ceremonies ended, Table 10 got the party started, shared some jokes, gathered…

By now, you’ve probably heard that Justin Timberlake did indeed attend a Marine Corps birthday ball last night in Richmond, Va., with Cpl. Kelsey De Santis. The Corps has released the photograph above, and there are others floating around online. Timberlake just weighed in on the experience on his website. To say he appreciated the evening would appear to be an understatement. A passage from his note: To all of you that serve every day for us… Ensuring our freedom, I say: My deepest gratitude to you. I’ve met so many of my heroes… From Michael Jordan to Michael Jackson.…

In his four years stationed at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, former Cpl. Joe Potter had never met Cpl. Jason Dunham. Potter joined the Marine Corps the year that Dunham died. But  Dunham’s legacy as a combat warrior and Medal of Honor recipient who gave his life to save his fellow Marines from an insurgent’s grenade in Iraq in April 2004 had been well ingrained in Potter’s memory during the four years he  spent working as an expeditionary airfield specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. Since hanging up his uniform, Potter has worked in his father’s painting business,…

As this Marine Corps Times story outlines, at least five celebrities are expected to attend Marine Corps birthday balls as the service celebrates its 236th birthday this week. The first of those balls was Saturday night. Actress Linda Hamilton, 55, best known for her role in the Terminator, attended a ball with Sgt. Ray Lewis, a combat correspondent. She asked to go after Lewis hilariously asked Golden Girl Betty White, 89, in a video posted to YouTube in July. As you can see in the following photo, Hamilton got out on the dance floor, too: Smooth moves, sergeant.

In the blink of an eye, it was over. Justin Timberlake may want to take notice. Cpl. Kelsey De Santis, the Marine who famously invited the singer and actor to attend the Marine Corps birthday ball with her, competed Saturday night in Operation Octagon XVI, a mixed martial arts event in Sterling, Va. To say it was a one-sided fight would be an understatement. De Santis, fighting in the 145-pound featherweight title fight, pummeled her opponent, Stacy Sneeringer. With a flurry of energy, De Santis took Sneeringer to the mat early, and finished her off 2:51 into the fight with…

The F-35B has started sea trials. You can read more about that here. Rather than settle for natural sound, a couple of new videos have pumped up the excitement by adding a musical score. The Navy, on its official YouTube channel, used Drowning Pool’s “Bodies.” An intense song, no doubt, what with its constant refrain of “Let the bodies hit the floor!” and all. Navy tweeted the video with the warning “BAD GUYS BEWARE.” [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-0SJX2YN60&feature=youtu.be[/youtube] The F-35 Joint Program Office used this video. While much more tame, the score seems inspired by Michael Bay’s films. [brightcove video=”1198229271001″ /] What do…

“Hell and Back Again,” a documentary by photographer Danfung Dennis, begins hitting theaters Oct. 5. It features members of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., who deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. Arguably the most powerful scenes in the trailer involve 27-year-old Sgt. Nathan Harris’ transition back home. The trailer is posted below. For the screening schedule click here. I’ll be buying a ticket. [vimeo]http://vimeo.com/29165748[/vimeo]

I reported it here last month, but TV funnyman Stephen Colbert just caught wind of it. A certain group of Marines in Afghanistan were asked by their leaders to avoid farting audibly around their Afghan partners because they are offended by flatulence. We don’t really know why the Afghans are offended, they just are. On his show last night, Colbert wagged a finger at the Marine Corps, even though it was never an official Marine Corps order. Check it out here: [HTML1] “We owe them the freedom to unleash a loud, proud, cheek-rattling chair-scorcher,” he said. He added: “What do…

Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Dakota Meyer appeared on “Late Show with David Letterman” Thursday night, and thing got loose pretty quickly. You’ve got to love “greasing the Bobcat” jokes, in particular: [HTML1] For what it’s worth, it appears Meyer is still laughing about the appearance. He posted the following message on Twitter this morning: The full episode is available here.

Did he do it, or not? I think that’s a fair question to ask today, as a viral video of rapper Soulja Boy’s supposed newest song rockets around the Internet. As many blogs have noted, a video of the song “Let’s Be Real” appeared online earlier this week. We can debate the musical merit until we’re blue in the face. It’s the lyrics that have many service members and military supporters up in arms: F— the FBI and the Army troops Fighting for what? B—-, be your own man I’ll be flying through the clouds With green like I’m Peter…
